Using Your Story in Peer Work (25-26 March 2019)

Whether we are public speakers, trainers, peer support workers or consumer consultants our personal stories can serve many functions:

  • Inspiration and hope
  • Encouragement
  • Examples of recovery
  • Courage
  • Giving the other person permission to share
  • Demonstrating understanding
  • Building trust and rapport

In this workshop, we look at strategies for sharing our stories in a peer work context. This allows us to have the necessary impact, preserve our personal boundaries, privacy, and stay focused on the therapeutic reason for telling the story.

We will look at the reasons for using our stories, the power of story telling, pros and cons of using personal stories and work on breaking down, reviewing and sharing aspects of our own stories.
This workshop is suitable for:
Current and aspiring peer workers, consumer speakers and trainers and consumer consultants who are wanting some guidance in how to use their story in helpful ways.
Please note that participants will be asked to share at least part of their own story during the workshop
